Surfing Level and Progression
This retreat is perfect for those surfers who are performing low to high intermediate level manoeuvres on a wave face yet feel they have plateaued in their abilities. You must be confident surfing over a reef in chest high to slightly overhead waves. We are going in the ‘off-season’ intentionally, to minimise crowds and maximise fun, rippable waves for all levels.
By working closely together with your TSR coach throughout the entire week, surfers will be able to identify the patterns or sub-optimal techniques holding them back and begin to optimise them for better surfing. Utilising The Surfer’s Roadmap curriculum and a fun and friendly approach, you’ll unlock years of progression on this retreat.
Your surfing sessions will be filmed and translated into an analysis on retreat and a deep analysis to take home.
What’s the difference between week 1/2 and week 3/4?
There are two main differences between weeks 1 and 2 (with TSR Coach Craig) and weeks 3 and 4 (with TSR Head Coach Kale).
On week 1 and 2, surfers will be filmed by Coach Craig for 1 session per day (morning usually). This footage will be translated into an analysis by Craig in the afternoon, after which you are invited to surf again but with Craig coaching from the water.
On week 3 and 4, surfers will have 2x sessions filmed per day by a professional filmer, and these sessions will all be used for the analysis with Kale throughout the week. Kale will surf with the students in most sessions.
Everything else, except the price (found below), remains the same.
Working with Craig (Gee to update with video analysis testimonies for Craig)

“I’ve improved more in 1 week than I have over 20 years of surfing! I’m so grateful to Kale and also incredibly annoyed at myself! Why didn’t I do this earlier!? I finally know what I should be doing to progress my surfing.
There are coaches and then there’s Kale. I don’t think there’s another surfer at Kale's level who also has the natural gift of coaching.”
Seb (TSR Nicaragua Student)
-
“When I’m surfing now I have so much more awareness about what to do on a wave to keep me in the power zone and to actually progress. Kale definitely has the sport of surfing broken down into its precise components and has a great skill in explaining those components to anyone.”
Tim (TSR Maldives Student)
-
“Kale has produced a surf coaching program that has made strong surfing technique bioavailable to his students. I now know I can improve and how I can improve.
My world has opened up so far as surfing is concerned and I couldn't be more psyched.”
Kevin (TSR Nicaragua Student)
-
“My 1 week in Nicaragua with Kale was exactly what I needed to get my surfing to the next level.
Kale has a special gift in not just seeing the complexity of surfing, but more importantly, he has the gift of being able to break the complexity down into simple instructions / cues for his students... I will be back for more! “
Kasper (TSR Nicaragua Student)
-
“He’s an amazing coach. He breaks down the fundamentals of surfing and its biomechanics really well with excellent articulation. The side by side video analysis was particularly helpful for me and has definitely helped me take big steps forward in my surfing this week.”
John (TSR Maldives Student)
-
“What normally would take me years of trial and error I learned in 1 week with Kale. He truly has a passion for surfing and teaching.
This retreat has given me a new perspective on how I view surfing and it’s something I wish I had access to 20 years ago. Already looking forward to the next trip!“

Post booking information

Arrival information
Guests are required to arrive in Medan (airport code KNO) in North Sumatra 1 day before your first retreat date (ie: if your retreat is Feb 2nd to 9th then you need to arrive in KNO on Feb 1st) . We will arrange 1 night’s accommodation in Medan (included in your booking) and a flight to the island on the first day of your retreat (this is a non-coaching day and the flight is included in your booking).
Luggage and boards transport
Please kindly note there are limitations to how many board bags can be taken on the flight and that we may have to condense surfboards into group bags for the domestic flight (with remaining boards to travel by ferry and arrive 24 hours later - this is standard operating procedure when getting to North Sumatra).
As a result, please consider packing a small duffle bag to separate non-surf travel essentials.
Retreat FAQ’s
Gee to update based on Nicaragua
-
We expect all surfers to bring (at least) 2 surfboards with them on retreat. Each surfer should also bring appropriate wetsuits for water temperature, leashes, zinc and wax, as it is not always guaranteed you can buy this on location.
-
You will be expected to arrive on the same day as indicated on your allocated retreat. For example, if your start date is the 1st December, please plan to arrive that day. This is not included within the coaching days, which will commence the day AFTER your retreat starts.
Check in and check out times depend on your location and accommodation type.
-
Everything that’s included is indicated on our “what’s included page”. Please note that we may not list everything that is considered an out of pocket expense.
-
We cannot advise on visa’s, insurance and associated travel reuqirements e.g. COVID 19.
Please do you research before joining us on retreat! This is not limited visa’s, insurance and cultural settings of each retreat location.
-
Our surf experiences are strictly non refundable. As such, we strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive travel insurance to protect you should you need to cancel. Deposits are non refundable and final payments are non refundable. This is because we commit this equity to securing locations and the heavy administrative duties involved in organising these experiences. In most cases, you are able to sell/transfer your place on an experience to another person. If there are external circumstances out of our control which prevent us from running the experience (natural disaster, pandemic travel restrictions, political upheaval, war etc) we will offer you a credit on the experience to use at a later date.
