Bringing the Right Surfboards

We recommend bringing at least 2 surfboards in case one gets damaged during the retreat. Surf shops are limited in the region.

Expect a variety of waves — from soft beach breaks to punchier reef setups — so pack accordingly.

Consider bringing:

  • 1–2x shortboards (your go-to daily driver boards such as the Kale Brock Designs ‘Everyday Short’)

  • 1x performance mid length which you can also find at KBD (a performance mid goes perfect in Sri Lanka!)

Go-to daily driver

The waves in Sri Lanka are perfect for progressing your surfing, so bringing something with a bit of extra length or volume—like a performance mid-length or fish—can really help you maximise your wave count.

Retreat FAQ’s

  • We recommend all surfers to bring (at least) 2 surfboards with them on retreat. Each surfer should also bring appropriate wetsuits for water temperature, leashes, zinc and wax, as it is not always guaranteed you can buy this on location.

  • You will be expected to arrive on the same day as indicated on your allocated retreat. For example, if your start date is the 1st December, please plan to arrive that day. This is not included within the coaching days, which will commence the day AFTER your retreat starts.

Check in and check out times depend on your location and accommodation type.

  • Everything that’s included is indicated on our “what’s included page”. Please note that we may not list everything that is considered an out of pocket expense.

  • We cannot advise on visa’s, insurance and associated travel reuqirements e.g. COVID 19.

We request that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance and provide us with the details.

  • Our surf experiences are strictly non refundable. As such, we strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive travel insurance to protect you should you need to cancel. Deposits are non refundable and final payments are non refundable. This is because we commit this equity to securing locations and the heavy administrative duties involved in organising these experiences. In most cases, you are able to sell/transfer your place on an experience to another person. If there are external circumstances out of our control which prevent us from running the experience (natural disaster, pandemic travel restrictions, political upheaval, war etc) we will offer you a credit on the experience to use at a later date.

Working with Kale

  • “I’ve improved more in 1 week than I have over 20 years of surfing! I’m so grateful to Kale and also incredibly annoyed at myself! Why didn’t I do this earlier!? I finally know what I should be doing to progress my surfing.

There are coaches and then there’s Kale. I don’t think there’s another surfer at Kale's level who also has the natural gift of coaching.”

    Seb (TSR Nicaragua Student)

  • “When I’m surfing now I have so much more awareness about what to do on a wave to keep me in the power zone and to actually progress. Kale definitely has the sport of surfing broken down into its precise components and has a great skill in explaining those components to anyone.”

    Tim (TSR Maldives Student)

  • “Kale has produced a surf coaching program that has made strong surfing technique bioavailable to his students. I now know I can improve and how I can improve.

My world has opened up so far as surfing is concerned and I couldn't be more psyched.”

    Kevin (TSR Nicaragua Student)

  • “My 1 week in Nicaragua with Kale was exactly what I needed to get my surfing to the next level.

Kale has a special gift in not just seeing the complexity of surfing, but more importantly, he has the gift of being able to break the complexity down into simple instructions / cues for his students... I will be back for more! “

    Kasper (TSR Nicaragua Student)

  •  “He’s an amazing coach. He breaks down the fundamentals of surfing and its biomechanics really well with excellent articulation. The side by side video analysis was particularly helpful for me and has definitely helped me take big steps forward in my surfing this week.”

    John (TSR Maldives Student)

  • What normally would take me years of trial and error I learned in 1 week with Kale. He truly has a passion for surfing and teaching.

This retreat has given me a new perspective on how I view surfing and it’s something I wish I had access to 20 years ago. Already looking forward to the next trip!“

    Joey (TSR Nicaragua Student)
